Nature-like production of drinking and distilled water in the Black Sea basin
A nature‑inspired technology for producing drinking water in the Black Sea waters is proposed, primarily utilizing solar energy and the year‑round cold deep layers of the Black Sea.
About the project. In nature there are fewer and fewer places with clean water suitable for drinking. Already today, virtually all water bodies are contaminated with microplastics. Existing water treatment systems for settlements are not designed to completely remove microplastics, so they are found not only in tap water but even in bottled water from globally known brands. A project is proposed to use a nature‑mimicking technology for obtaining drinking water by actively condensing water vapor from the air above the sea surface, leveraging the unique hydrology of the Black Sea. This method is protected by a Russian Federation invention patent. The launch of the startup should be preceded by CDF calculations with modeling of air flows, heat‑transfer processes, phase changes of substances, which will provide the data needed to design industrial installations of the required capacity and for techno‑economic assessments of the project's profitability. The startup is attractive given the ongoing worsening worldwide problem of many countries' access to clean drinking water, as well as the prospect of replicating it across the entire Black Sea basin. For perspective, each year 360 cubic kilometres of water evaporate from the Black Sea surface, i.e., on average 1 cubic kilometre per day. In the summer months, depending on the weather, 2 to 4 cubic kilometres of water evaporate per day, which corresponds to roughly 200–400 grams of crystal‑clear, life‑giving moisture per day for every inhabitant of Earth, including infants and the elderly! Collecting all this water is, of course, impossible, but it is enough for an interesting innovative project.
